Chapter 16

Abby was up before the sun, excited as a kid on Christmas morning. She did a little dance, today was the day. She would finally have the annoying, bright blue, fiberglass torture device removed, and tonight, she would wash her hair with both hands. It was going to be awesome. The bed was empty when she exited the bathroom. Abby followed the scent of brewing coffee, fixed herself a cup, then joined Jack on the little balcony off the kitchen. There wasn’t much of a view, but it did overlook the pool area, better than looking at the other buildings like some of the tenants.

Jack turned and leaned his butt against the railing. “Morning, Abby girl. Today’s the big day.” He made a big show of looking at his non-existent watch. “I take it you're excited?”

“Maybe, a little.”

“What do you want to do after your appointment? We should celebrate.”

“I was thinking we could go out for lunch and I want to order something that requires the use of both hands.” She wiggled her fingers at him.

Jack snickered. “The options are endless on that one, baby girl.”

Now it was baby girl? Not baby, or Abby girl, but a combo. Ugh! He was killing her. Abby didn’t know if she could hold out much longer, regardless of the vow she made to herself. Seriously, if he kept this up, she could not be held responsible for her actions. Actions that included jumping his bones and shoving her tongue in his mouth, except sexier than it sounded.

Jack pushed away from the railing and walked back inside. “So, what do you want for breakfast?”

“Just coffee, I’m too excited to eat.”

Jack turned. His eyebrows furrowed over narrowed eyes as he frowned at her. “You shouldn’t skip meals. It’s not good for you and you’re too skinny.”

She wanted to take exception to his high-handed tone, but she couldn’t muster enough outrage. He said she was too skinny. What girl wouldn’t love that? Love? Yeah, she loved him, was in love with him. Abby was pretty sure Jack loved her, too. Although they thought Abby was oblivious, she caught on to his friends and their antics at the bonfire. She secretly observed Jack over the past weeks and saw the way he looked at her when he thought her attentions were elsewhere.

Abby’s lack of experience hindered her and made her unsure how to proceed. Maybe, once her cast was off, he would stop with his constant fussing and she could somehow force him to acknowledge his obvious attraction. She vowed to let him make the first move, but, what if just like her, Jack worried about losing their friendship should a relationship not work out? What if he was waiting on a sign from her? She’d done a good job of hiding her feelings, so far. Perhaps that was the problem.

Abby followed Jack back into the apartment. She sat at the breakfast bar that separated the kitchen from the living area, and studied him, as she did every morning.
